Hundreds of whales are facing unnecessary death

About two hundred whales living in the North Atlantic are about to die this year. Icelandic whalers have been hunting Minke whales since April. Despite international outcries, this year the local authorities have authorised whalers to kill 200 Minke whales. Last year, due to diminishing interest in the meat of big sea mammals, only 60 of them were killed.

Sea level is rising three times faster than expected

The sea level is rising three times faster than it had been expected. This is caused by the fast melting of glaciers in the Arctic. It has been reported by the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP).

According to AMAP, by 2100 sea level will rise by 0.9 – 1.6 metres, which is almost three times as much than it had been estimated in 2007 by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Russia promised to ban the hunting of polar bears

Russia has decided to impose a complete ban on the hunting of polar bears this year. It has been announced by the initiative around the Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

Today the European Commission has published a new plan on how to improve Europe’s biodiversity over the next decade. The strategy includes six targets which address the main drivers of biodiversity loss. The wolves have come back to yet another part of Europe – Catalonia

This is the first time after eighty years that wolves have appeared again in the Catalonia region in Spain. Footprint tracks were recently discovered just forty kilometers from Barcelona.
